Frequently Asked Questions

Technical Support FAQs

Find answers to common technical questions from installers, architects, and engineers about Elite Blocc building systems.

What concrete mix design is recommended for Elite Blocc ICF walls?
We recommend a 4000 PSI concrete mix with 3/8" aggregate maximum size and a slump of 5-6 inches. The mix should include plasticizers for improved flow characteristics. For cold weather applications, accelerators may be used following manufacturer guidelines. Always ensure proper consolidation using a pencil vibrator to eliminate voids and achieve full structural capacity.
How do I achieve proper air sealing at window and door openings?
Proper air sealing requires a multi-step approach: First, apply a continuous bead of low-expansion foam sealant around the rough opening. Install the window or door per manufacturer specifications. Apply self-adhering membrane to bridge the gap between the frame and ICF. Finally, use backer rod and elastomeric sealant for the exterior joint. This creates a continuous air barrier while allowing for thermal movement.
What reinforcement schedule is required for different wall heights?
Reinforcement requirements vary by wall height and local codes. As a general guide: 8-foot walls require #4 rebar at 24" o.c. vertically and horizontally. 10-foot walls need #5 rebar at 16" o.c. vertically and #4 at 24" o.c. horizontally. Always consult your structural engineer and local building codes for specific requirements. Additional reinforcement is required around openings and at corners per our detailed engineering drawings.
Can electrical and plumbing be run through the ICF walls?
Yes, services can be easily integrated into ICF walls. Electrical conduits should be installed before concrete placement, secured to the reinforcement. For retrofit installations, use a hot knife or chainsaw to cut channels in the EPS, maintaining minimum 1.5" cover to the concrete core. Plumbing should be run through sleeves cast into the wall. Never compromise the structural integrity of the concrete core. All penetrations must be sealed to maintain the air barrier.
What finishing options are available for interior and exterior surfaces?
Elite Blocc walls accept virtually any finishing system. Exterior options include: traditional stucco, EIFS, brick veneer, stone, fiber cement, or wood siding. Interior finishes can include: direct-applied plaster, drywall on furring strips, or adhesive-attached drywall. The EPS surface provides excellent adhesion for most finishes. Always follow manufacturer recommendations for attachment methods and include proper moisture management details.
How do I calculate thermal bridging and achieve Passive House standards?
Elite Blocc systems minimize thermal bridging through continuous insulation inside and outside the concrete core. Our standard assemblies achieve U-values of 0.10 W/m²K or better. For Passive House certification, use our PHPP calculation spreadsheets which include psi-values for all junction details. Key strategies include: thermally broken window installations, insulated foundation connections, and careful detailing at roof intersections. Our technical team can provide project-specific thermal modeling support.
